Everything Spirit Guides

Spirit guides are spiritual beings that are assigned to us before we are born that help nudge and guide us through life. Some are our ancestors and deceased family members. Some entities may have names. In some cases it may be a group of guides that all have the same name. However that looks for us as individuals, we each have our own “Spirit Team” designed to walk with us on our own individual path. They’re responsible for helping us fulfill the spiritual contract(s)/agreements we made with ourselves before we incarnated.  Your higher self helps select these guides, who help us while we are living out our incarnation.  To put it simply, a spirit guide is a soul that has reached a certain point in their evolution so that they aware and expanded enough to assist another soul in their evolution. Guides have been incarnated as humans, so they understand the human experience. They are capable of a level of non-judgment, compassion, and love that most of us can only guess at.

Some guides will stay with you throughout your entire life, and others will pop in every now and again to help you with specific areas of your life or goals you are trying to achieve.  These guides are at varying levels of consciousness themselves.  Some may be highly ascended masters and others might be your average spirit who just happens to be a master in a certain area.  They may appear to have a male or female energy, of show up as a Spirit Animal – though in reality they are all just pure Source energy. They may be spirits who have had physical incarnations, or they might be spirits who have never taken corporeal form.  You may be the only person they are guiding, or they may be on the “panel” for other people as well.  When it’s time for your spirit guides to help you, they tune in to your energy and help direct you to fulfill your earthly mission. Usually spirit animals are conduits of wisdom or act as protector spirits or companions.

In Native American cultures, some say that we are connected to at least 9 spirit animals who will walk the path with us, helping, teaching and learning as we go through this life. Much like we have one spirit guide that is always with us through our various incarnations, we too have one spirit animal guide that accompanies us through our various incarnations. The Native Americans call this “The Main Guardian Spirit”. The “Main Guardian” on my animal totem is both Crow and Raven (interchangeably) and I have two wolves that are always by my side.

Spirit guides can see what’s going on in our lives, and when it’s time for them to actually guide and/or intervene they have several ways they can accomplish this – however, they do have to be invited in. Once you begin inviting in these spirit guides, there are different ways you might experience their presence.

Sending signs.  Guides can arrange synchronicities to help alert you to something you need to see or know about.  Pay attention to those when they happen.

Gut feelings.  Guides can poke you in the gut when you’re experiencing something they want you to pay attention to.  Following your gut feelings is probably a good idea.  Have you ever had this eerie feeling that something terrible was going to happen but you couldn’t quite put your finger on it?  That might be a guide poking you in your gut.

Intuitive insight.  Guides can send you flashes of intuition which may sound like a voice in your head.  “Slow down!” and then you realize you were almost in a car accident.  These are thoughts that appear to come out of nowhere but which contain important information you’ll want to notice.  Many people tune out their intuition, but it’s a valuable source of information.

Sending people into your life.  Your guides sometimes get together with other people’s guides and together they try to create a meeting between their charges.  Perhaps you are thinking about someone from college and BOOM! – you suddenly see them in the bookstore later that day. Chance encounter?  Probably not.  Perhaps you were thinking about moving and you run into your old realtor friend in the supermarket.  If it feels like a coincidence, consider that it might be more of a set up.

Arranging and nudging.  Guides can also nudge you in the direction they want you to go, or arrange for something to happen to you.  For example, perhaps you’re running late and can’t find your keys.  You’re frustrated because you need to get somewhere on time.  Suddenly, your phone rings and it’s a really important call you would have missed if you had found your keys earlier.  Who do you think actually misplaced your keys?  This is hard for them because you have free will.  They can only arrange so much or nudge so hard.  The more you can pick up on their clues, the better.  Sometimes you just need to surrender to a situation that seems frustrating.

How do you connect with your guides directly? Wouldn’t it be great if your guides could just call you on the phone and tell you what’s coming in your future, or tell you to look out for a guy named Joe, or that your child needs you and you should get to them right away?  For some people that’s quite nearly how it works.  It just takes time and practice to be able to hear, see, or feel your guides.  Here are some ways you can work on increasing your connection directly:

Listen to your intuition. Many people dismiss their intuition. It’s not always pleasant.  However, do not mistake your ego for your intuition.  Spirit will never come through emotionally charged, critical, or judgmental. Spirit will always come through as love.

Go with your gut.  Following your gut instinct is also a manner in which guides try to direct you.  For example, let’s say you’re in a business meeting and logic and reason tell you that the people sitting in front of you will fulfill their end of the deal, but your gut feeling says these people are going to fail to deliver and you’ll be stuck holding the bag.  Listen to that gut feeling.  If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.  At the very least, use your gut feelings to protect and keep yourself safe. Side Note: Don’t mistake your unhealed trauma for intuition or gut feelings.

Watch for signs.  Ask your guides for what you want and then watch for signs that you’ve been heard.  My guides like to show me numbers in sequences – say 111 or 444.  Signs can come in so many ways.  I’ve received messages from friends, family, colleagues, coworkers, song lyrics, movie scenes – that completely coincide with specific things I’ve been contemplating – which may seem randomly coincidental – but it’s not. It’s an answer you’ve been waiting for.

Journal.  A method I recommend to a lot of people during my readings is to open a journal program or just a Word document and write down some questions you’d like to ask your guides.  Be quiet and meditative and type up the answers you hear.  Keep going as if you’re having a conversation with them.  It may seem like you’re just typing answers from your imagination, but keep going.  When you get to a point where the answers you’re getting don’t feel like your own voice, take notice of what they say.  A benefit of this approach is being able to refer back to it later. Especially notice when the dialogue changes from “I” to “You.” I is first person. You is your guide coming through.

Meditate.  Do a meditation where you imagine yourself going to a room or a garden and ask your guides to appear before you, sit with you, and chat.  Like the journaling method, just see what they say.  In time your connection will become stronger, and the information you get will be more accurate and applicable to your life.

Dream.  One of the best ways to meet and connect with your guides is to meet them halfway.  Open your dream up to them.  You can put out the intention every night to see and connect with your guides in your dreams.  It may take a while, but it will probably eventually work.  If you can master lucid dreaming you’ll have success much faster since once you become lucid you can simply ask your guides to appear and talk to you.

Ask a psychic.  One of the services I offer in my readings is to help people identify at least some of their guides, usually the ones working with them on the areas they’re asking about in the reading.  This introduction can help you tune in on your guides yourself.

How do you know if you’re just imagining them?
You’ll know by the advice you get.  Does it resonate with you?  Do you feel like it’s coming from them and not you?  Does the advice make sense to you?  Do you get great results when you listen to their counsel?  Do they appear the same way every time?  If the answers to these questions are all “yes” then you are on the right track. If you need assistance getting intuitive advice, book a reading with me and I’ll tell you what your guides most want you to know.

10 Steps To Connect To Your Spirit Guides

If you are ready to invite in that voice of love, follow these 10 steps to connect to your spirit guides.

The first step to connecting with your spirit guides is to get into the habit of asking. We often forget that we have guidance within us and around us. In order to change this, we have to change our habits. It’s important that you start getting into the habit of asking your guides for help. The more you ask, the more you receive — period.

Make a list of the five to 10 biggest things you need help with. You can do this now, or you can come back to this exercise after aligning with your inner wisdom through prayer or meditation. Listen to that inner wisdom and let the thoughts come through.

Once you have made this list, offer up everything you need help with and invite in the guides of the highest truth and compassion to reveal solutions. Say, “Thank you, guides of the highest truth and compassion, for revealing the solutions to these problems.” Then go through your list.

Some examples…

“Thank you, guides of the highest truth and compassion, for offering solutions to my issue with my health.”

“Thank you, guides of the highest truth and compassion, for revealing the solutions to the problems I’m having in my marriage.”

“Thank, you guides of the highest truth and compassion, for revealing the solutions to my struggle with finding a career I love.”

Just go one by one asking the guides to help you. If you want to get really laser focused, you can choose just one and offer it up daily for a while.

Remember always to call in the guides of the highest truth and compassion. You don’t want to invite the funky guides to the party! Be very specific and clear about what kind of guidance you’re calling in so you don’t get any riff-raff coming through.

As with the human world, there are lots of different characters, and we don’t always want to invite every character over for dinner. The same goes for spiritual relationships. We want to open up our consciousness, space and energy only to the guides of the highest truth and compassion.

Don’t worry about this too much. You call the shots, so do not fear those other beings. They can’t come in without your permission.

You don’t have to wait for a problem to crop up in order to call on your spirit guides. Before I get on stage, every time I give a talk, the first thing I say backstage to myself is, “Thank you, guides of the highest truth and compassion, for speaking through me.” Whenever I do that, I know that the words that I need will come through me. The simple act of asking is all that is required for the guidance to show up.

The second step in connecting to your spirit guides is to listen. The way to do this is through meditation. When you meditate, you quiet your mind so that you can hear the wisdom of the guidance that’s within you and around you.

We have to slow down our vibration to become aligned with the presence of these guides. When we attune our energy to the frequency of love and peace, we can more easily connect to the vibrational messaging of our spirit guides.

You can say a prayer such as, “Thank you, guides of the highest truth and compassion. Thank you for showing me what I need to know. Thank you for leading me in the right direction. Thank you for whatever it is that I need.”

Then you can sit in meditation for five, 10 or 20 minutes. This can be a very simple meditation. You can simply pay attention to your breath, becoming mindful of the sounds and sensations around you. Or you can repeat a mantra silently, which is one of my favorite ways to meditate.

Once you’ve meditated, your next step is to write with your spirit guides. Open your journal or just grab a few sheets of paper. At the top, write an invitation to them, such as:

“Thank you, guides of the highest truth and compassion, for revealing to me the solutions to these issues.”

“Thank you, guides of the highest truth and compassion, for revealing to me whatever you want me to know.”

“Dear guides of the highest truth and compassion, I welcome you to write through me now.”

Then simply let your pen flow.

Just riff onto the page. Let whatever needs to come through come through. Ideas, stories, topics, inspired visions, things that you may not have thought of on your own, will begin to come onto the page. You can also try  Gabby Bernstein’s Spirit Guides Meditation and free-writing exercise.

You may find in this writing experience that your guides begin speaking to you directly. Instead of writing in the first person you may begin writing in the second person. When I am channeling my guides they often say, “Dear sister…”

In some cases, your handwriting might even change. You might feel a presence of energy moving through you. You might feel a heat in your body. And that means that there’s a presence that’s working through you to give you some kind of direction. (psssst. This is also called Automatic Writing *wink*)

Your guides can play fun games with you! They like to show you that they’re present. So get playful with them and ask them for a sign. Sometimes I ask for lilies. Sometimes I ask for numbers in sequence.

Recently I’ve been healing some physical things, and for a while I kept getting numbers in sequence. It was just the guides saying, “We’ve got you. We’re with you.”

Have you never asked for a sign before? Or have you asked but not known whether you received it?

You’ll be blown away when you start to ask your guides to show you signs! It will rock your world.

It’s one thing to ask for guidance. It’s another thing to witness it, to really take it in and relish in the presence that’s supporting you.

When you pay attention to the guidance you receive, you’re letting yourself be in the awe and wonder of all the love that is around you. It’s a big deal. This beautiful feeling is available when you truly let yourself be the witness of this amazing support that is always with you.

The practice of paying attention to guidance isn’t about demanding. You don’t go around all day asking, “Where’s my guidance? Where’s my guidance?” Instead, you simply allow yourself to be open to the wonder of that guidance.

Your guidance may show up in cool and unexpected ways, even in ways I haven’t mentioned here. Your guidance can show up as a song on the radio, or maybe a spark of light, or somebody saying to you exactly what you needed to hear. Our guides work through other people. They work through doctors, friends, children and even strangers.

As I mentioned in step 5, you want to thank your guides. Rather than being in a place of neediness, you want to be in a place of gratitude. Shift the way you talk to your guides. If you find yourself thinking things like, “Guides, why haven’t you given me this yet?” or “Guides, I don’t believe in you. Why haven’t you shown up for me faster?” — you show your distrust of them. You’re telling them that you’re not really open to their guidance and that you want to be in control.

Instead, you want to be thanking them, appreciating them and feeling deep love and gratitude for them. When you see your sign, say a silent thank-you to your guides. When you receive any form of guidance, thank them. Just say silently, “Thank, you guides, for showing me this solution.” Or, “Thank you, guides, for this sign.” When you are given a spiritual assignment, thank them for that as well.

Your gratitude keeps the relationship so strong and keeps those guides present with you all the time, because they know they are welcome. When you open your heart to offer your guides gratitude and appreciation, they boomerang that energy right back to you. It’s hard to describe what it feels like to be in this place of constant love and gratitude with your guides. It’s a tremendous and beautiful feeling. And it is available to you.

Your guides have a plan better than you do. Your guides want to bring you to the right relationship, the right career, the doctor you need, the experience that will help you.

We get in the way of that guidance. I have often avoided that guidance by trying to control situations. I obsess over how things should go and try to manipulate outcomes to get what I think is best. When we do this kind of thing, we push away our guides.

But when we let go of our plans and trust in a plan that’s much greater than ours, we start to truly feel like we’re being led. When we surrender, we can feel our guides leading us to the next right action.

This is what I refer to as taking spiritually aligned action. Releasing the outcome is mandatory to truly be in co-creation with your spirit guides.

If you have young kids in your life, you may be aware that many children can still see their guides. They may even speak about them. Usually around the age of 7 the veil starts to close and we shut down to this guidance system.

To lift that veil and reconnect with your guides, be more childlike! Do things that bring you joy. Jump on a trampoline. Go for a run. Paint. Swim. Cook. Whenever I’m cooking, I feel the presence of my guides around me.

Do the things that bring you joy, and that guidance will just show up fast. You’ll feel it. Remember, joy is the most powerful vibration we can embody!

You don’t have to do this step. But if you feel called to ask your guide’s name (or multiple guides’ names), ask them to reveal their names to you. The first name that comes to mind will be the name of your guide. It may sound like a strange name, but that’s their name. Trust what you hear. The first name you hear is right.

My main guide, for instance, is Anunatuk. I also have two wolves (one white: Anuja, and one black: Jayate) who are my protectors. I also have a group of guides called The Elysium Healers.

Believe in yourself. Believe in your capacity to call on this presence. Believe in your capacity to connect to these guides and to feel that support. Believe that you have an ever-present energy of love that is always within you and around you supporting you and guiding you.

The more that you trust in your own psychic ability, the more you’ll be able to hear and the more you’ll be able to be led by this presence.

Allowing the presence of these guides to come into your life is a great gift. Not only will they support you, but they will also support you in supporting others. They’ll help support you in being a light in the world.

We need this presence of light to support us right now. We need this presence to support us through the chaos of these times, through the dramas, through the terror, through the violence. We need this presence to bring us back to love.

The more you talk to your spirit guides, the more you’ll rely on this ever-present guidance system. As you ask for and surrender to divine guidance, miracles will occur more and more often.

Gordon Smith also gives a wonderful exercise as a way and means to feel your spirit guides around you in his book, ‘Intuitive Studies | A Complete Course in Mediumship.’ He calls it The Calling Card Exercise:

  • Take yourself into the silence, into your own quiet space, the space that brings you to the center of yourself.
  • Just sit still and quiet in the holy light that makes you aware of how still and contented you are.
  • At the most powerful and intense point of your meditation, send out a thought to your spirit guide – just one thought and no more. Ask if they will allow you to feel their presence in your space.
  • Wait for any change, any sensation or feeling that you might pick up. Ask no more questions. Do nothing other than register what change, if any, you are feeling.
  • Just sit in the presence of your guide and share the feeling of having them in your space for a moment.
  • Thank your guide and ask them to step back.
  • Be aware if the feeling changes, the air, or the atmosphere.
  • Start to breathe deeply into your lungs again.
  • Be more aware with each breath you take until you feel that you are ready to open your eyes.
  • Open your eyes.
  • Take a few minutes to slowly examine what you have just experienced. Look at it from a very calm position and ask yourself if you genuinely felt change around you, rather than saw things in your mind. Remember, this is about feeling presence, not seeing pictures (although it is possible that you may visualize something or hear something in your mind). This exercise is primarily to notice the energetic changes you feel when your guide is close and when they are not.

Shamanic Journeying

One can enter the shamanic journey state under the influence of a drum beat. The drum beat is the same sound that we all came into the world listening to: the drumming of our mother’s heart. This drum beat helps us enter the theta brain wave state, which is the same state we are in when we are dreaming.

Journeying into what we call “non-ordinary reality” is like a dream. In journey state, the vibrational sound of the drum, rattle, or toning activates a change in brain waves. The brain changes from beta (ordinary consciousness) to theta waves. It is a good idea to write down what happens in your journey right after, because sometimes it can be hard to recall, much like a dream.

This kind of divination tool can provide robust information from your helping spirits. It is very important to ask the right question of your guides. If we ask a question that isn’t getting at the heart of an issue, we can misinterpret what our guides tell us.

Your helping spirits are not interested in telling  you what job you should take, or who you should date, or where you should live.

Rather they are there to guide you to live in a way that expresses your soul’s divine reason to be here on this earth. Your helping spirits are aware that you have your own free will and you will make your own decisions.

Why journey?

If you are a soul explorer doing your soul work, shamanic journeys are perhaps the best tool for you to work with.

In the journey state, you can enter the spirit world (non-ordinary reality) where you can meet with and seek council from your helping spirits, your animal helpers, and your ancestors.

How to start a shamanic journey practice

  1. Wait until you are relaxed to go into non-ordinary reality. Make sure that you have a clear mind.
  2. Smudge and clear your energy field with your chosen herb (sage, sweetgrass, palo santo). In a dark room, lay down flat, with your head on the same level as your heart (no pillow). Lay and contemplate your question and your upcoming journey.
  3. When I journey alone, I like to use the app Mindful Bear on my phone. You can set the app for an amount of time and see where it takes you. Ten minutes is a good place to start (there is no time in non-ordinary reality).
  4. Begin by shutting your eyes and visualizing an opening in the earth in a place where you felt safe as a child. Perhaps your back yard, a field or park where you used to play and imagine. It can be a hole, a cave, a tree, or a swamp. Inspect the hole’s details and look around before you go inside.
  5. Enter the opening and slide down, down, down the tunnel to the spirit world, and explore—what do you see? What is it like? This first journey is a time to explore.

Expand your practice

In your next journey you might call out—”who is here?” “Can anyone help me?” See who shows up. You might ask, “Please take me to my grandmother”; you might ask, “who are my animal guides?”

When you go to the journey world, you can ask specific questions of your companions or guides. For example, “what is holding me back?” or “how can I make sure that I am on my soul’s path?”

Finally, Make sure that you only ask one question per journey until you get to know your guides. Or you may not need to ask a question at all. Sometimes your guides will just know what you are there for or what you need, so let them guide you.

The biggest lesson I have learned from my guides is to be patient and let my guides show me what they want to show me. When I try to control how the journey goes, I do not learn much and everyone involved gets frustrated…

In her book, ‘Where Two Worlds Meet,” Janet Nohavec gives a Meditation to Meet Your Spirit Guides:

  • Find a  place where you won’t be disturbed for 20 – 30 minutes. Sit comfortably with your back straight. Rest your hands on your knees and close your eyes. Take 3 deep breaths, exhaling slowly after each breath. Relax your body from top of your head to the tip of your toes.
  • Set an intention to meet with your guide or guides.
  • When you’re totally relaxed and have stilled your mind as much as possible, imagine yourself walking along a beautiful path on a bright, sunny day. You see another path that goes off to the side. You follow the side path until you come to a bench and sit down. After a few moments of sitting peacefully, you notice that there is another empty bench across from you. Look at the bench and ask one of your spirit guides to come and sit across from you.
  • In this slightly altered state, become aware of the presence of your guide. Notice how you sense them. You may see them visually; you may hear a name, or simply get the feeling of a man or woman’s presence. You may also be aware of a predominant color associated with this experience. You may simply notice a change in atmosphere or an intensity or density of energy. Whatever your sense is correct at this point. There is no right or wrong.
  • Ask the guide if they have a particular message for you. They may or may not have one. Remember that you are always in charge. Keep an open mind.
  • Spend as much time as you want in the presence of your guide or guides. When you sense that you’ve received everything they wanted to communicate to you this day, thank them for coming. Invite them to come again in your meditation and to make themselves known. Slowly begin to become aware of your breathing and bring your presence back into the room. Open your eyes. You may want to write down any thoughts or experiences you had during this time.
